Hi Melissa! This can definitely be scary considering all the things that are happening around the world. I have a few suggestions for you. I would definitely remain alert and aware of your surroundings. I also would not carry too many bags which can cause a distraction and have your phone ready in the event you need to call campus security. You may also want to invest in pepper spray as well. I hope this helps and be safe out there! Good luck to you!

Hi Melissa. Safety is your number ONE priority no matter where you are going (day or night). Keep alert on the bus transportation. When stepping off the bus keep alert if you have to walk alone a certain distance. Never hesitate to look at who is around you. Check your fone for GPS locations and apps that can alert for help (The COMPANION fone app may be a good one). Maybe have mom and dad check into personal safety alarms. Keep a cell fone or 911 help chain with you at all times. From my experience there are kids coming and going all around on campus and usually campuses are well lit. God bless!

Melissa,
Check on the availability of campus escorts, perhaps a volunteer "safety patrol" sort of thing. Ask the campus police. Why do you have to walk alone? Try to find classmates, and park in the same areas as them, or even walk together to one of your cars, and then drive to the other car. Stay ALERT. Absolutely NO texting while walking!! Walk in well-lit and open areas. Be mindful of barriers such as walls, shrubs, etc which offer concealment. Park in well-lit areas. Get into your car without delay. Don't dilly-dally outside the car. Get in and lock the doors. If anyone approaches your car to ask for "help" because their car won't start, etc., do not roll down the window or stop to help. sorry. There should be call stations they can use in the parking lot or in the elevators.
Not to make you overly paranoid, but, remember, there is no standard description of what a "bad guy" looks like. Heck, there could be a "bad girl." In security situations, compassion is a weakness! However, also realize that most days go by without anything bad happening. So, don't be too afraid to even venture out!
