Greg’s Answer

You appear to have the desire/passion, so the rest is just learning and practicing. "Computer engineer" can mean either hardware or software engineering; the first poster's Arduino advice is relevant to the former (but Raspberry Pi is an alternative, and even Lego Mindstorms may be useful). The software side is even easier: get a book or take a course (high school or online) in a programming language, then start writing code. If you get stuck, sites like stackoverflow have outstanding advice. There are tens of thousands of open-source projects out there that can be hacked on, fixed, improved, or even taken over if they've been abandoned; I'm a big proponent of that route. Or maybe you have a particular interest in graphics or 3D or dynamic web pages or fonts or obfuscated code or low-level assembly language or whatever; maybe writing something from scratch is more your style. Ultimately the best way to becoming is by doing, so just dive in!

Lokesh’s Answer

HI,
There are several advantages to becoming a computer engineer. Here are a few:
Demand is growing, so it shouldn't be too hard to find a job.
You can easily make your computer's performance better without needing to go to a tech store, and if it breaks down, you will save a lot of money by repairing it yourself.
You will be able to help your friends fix up their broken computers, and this can serve as an extra source of income.

Jesus’s Answer

I think Computer Engineering is as hard as you make it be.
Studying in Computer Engineering, I would have to say that I've had some pretty easy semesters and not-so-easy ones. Most of my easy semesters were when I put the time into studying as a priority and that's investing a lot of hours. It's nothing to be intimidated about, if you put in the effort.

Hard is a very relative word. I'm an engineer, and I think the job of a teacher is incredibly hard.

If you "really" want to be a computer engineer, buy an Arduino for ~$25. That's all you have to buy and the rest of the stuff is free.

Sabyasachi’s Answer

A subject can't be hard. It is your belief and interest towards the subject makes it tough.
If you have interest in computer science then you will find it exciting rather than tough. But if you don't have interest then you will feel it very tough.
Ask yourself do you love working with computers? If yes then don't think too much just go for it. Rest will fall in place automatically.
Best wishes.

How hard is it to become a movie star?
How hard is it to become a professor?
How hard is it to become a CEO?

I agree with Arduino that it is really difficult to judge how "hard" it is to do something. Different people have different starting points, and it has different distances to go before achieving the same goal.

For me, I was not a CS majored student when I was in college, and it did take me longer to get where normally CS students could get easily at software engineering. And I'm still trying hard to adjust myself to this challenging position.

If you really want it, don't think about how hard it will be. Just go for it. And you will find it exciting.
