Is it a good idea to retake classes I've gotten a B in?

I want to be competitive for colleges, but am not sure if having the retake symbol next to my grade on my transcript is worth it. #grades

Hi Julia,

Interesting question. So first of all there is nothing wrong with a B and it is highly unlikely that you will get rejected from a college just because you have one B on your transcript. I am not sure what year you are in high school and what your GPA is, but a B probably won't cause your GPA to "tank" and neither is a B GPA (3.00) necessarily bad.

When I was in high school we were allowed to retake courses to improve our grades, but it was noted on our transcript what particular class we retook. I can't say for certain what the admissions board would think if they saw a symbol next to a retaken class, it could be either bad or good. Good in the sense that you did't back down from a challenge, but also possibly bad given that you had to go back and repeat a class that you didn't do well in. Unless you got an F or a D in a class or a low C and it really impacts your GPA, I wouldn't retake the class.

As an overall point if I may, you likely won't be able to retake every class that you get an unsatisfactory grade in. There were grades that I got in high school and college that I was not 100% pleased with, but I survived and managed to do just fine.

I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck.

Best,

Austin
