Is it difficult balancing a music education major with extracurricular activities?

I will be majoring in music education but I still want to participate in clubs and greek life at my college. I am wondering if that is doable or reasonable at all with my major, especially since music majors are so demanding.

Bridget’s Answer

It can be difficult, especially since a lot of your ensemble classes will require night and evening attention, and many classes and placements are early in the morning, but never fear! It is not impossible. I personally found solace in the service organization I was part of outside of the music department - it helped me define myself as the whole, complex person I am, not just a music major. I recommend sticking with a one or two extras that you really love, at least to start. College

is at least four years (often 5 in Music Ed) - there is so much you can experience and accomplish in that time!

Bridget recommends the following next steps:

Decide what you really want to do outside of your classes - Greek or a club that you are passionate about and sign up. If there are other clubs you are interested in but not so passionate about, maybe wait a semester or two until you have your footing in your major.
Time management is key! Use a planner, app, or calendar on your phone - whatever makes the most sense to you and (most importantly) that you will use consistently - to track your time. This isn’t just events, but blocked out time for practicing, studying, and lesson planning.
Remember that you are human and college is the time for you to figure yourself out! If something isn’t working, give yourself the space to figure out why and make a change!
