What are the rewards of pursuing a double major?

I am passionate about environmental issues, and would like to use business to become a part in solving that problem. My university does not have a "green" business degree as some schools do. At this point I am intending to pursue a business major with an environmental science minor. I am curious if there would be any real benefit to pursuing a double major instead or if I should just plan to go on to a masters in environmental studies once I have a business foundation.

Jennifer, I agree with Marina's comments above, and I did double major in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Environmental Policy. This allowed me to take more government and law classes within this area of study. My second major was Journalism with a concentration in Public Relations. Both have served me well in corporate communications over the years and it allows me to use those strengths in Corporate Social Responsibility.

Jennifer,

I think one advantage of a double major is that you can go into either field once you graduate, or you can start your career where there's a nexus between the two fields you majored in. Although, a double major may take you somewhat longer to finish than just one major, it may still be less than the time it takes to get a graduate degree. So if you want to start your career as soon as possible, a double major may be the way to go.

However, there are advantages of obtaining a Master's Degree, if you can afford it and if you have the time to put into it. It allows you to have additional expertise in the career you choose. Also, it may make you more marketable for some jobs and positions that may require a Master's Degree. Additionally, you mention doing your undergraduate in Business and your graduate studies in Environmental studies, but have you ever considered doing your undergrad major in the environmental field, and possibly doing an MBA, instead? That's an option that may be worth looking into and researching.

Thank you comment icon I have considered that route. The reason I chose to start with business has a few dimensions. Firstly, I feel that it is a good foundation for most any field I would want to enter. Secondly, my local school has only an "Environmental Science" program and unfortunately not an "Environmental Studies" path. If I understand correctly, this means it is much more science based than what I would hope for; I am interested in environmental ethics and policy as well as sustainable business.... Jennifer
Thank you comment icon ....So I thought I could get my initial degree here, then maybe move somewhere, like Boulder, Colorado, that has a more well rounded environmental studies program. Lastly, I thought it may be easier to find descent work with a bachelors so that I could work and go to school afterword. What do you think of these points? Jennifer
Thank you comment icon It sounds like you have a well-thought out and rational plan and have done your research. If you feel this will work for you based on your future career plans, then continue do so, always keeping in mind that you may need to be flexible and it's ok to make adjustments to your plan, as you continue your studies. I wish you the best of luck and success in your endeavors. Marina Castro
