Dina’s Answer

Hi Kristin - I have worked in the tech industry for more 20 years, and it's truly more inclusive than it's ever been. To Mary's point, many companies recognize that they lack diversity in this area, and are working hard to encourage women to apply.

A big point for you is to keep in mind that most men will apply for jobs, even when they don't meet all of the qualifications. Women generally won't apply, unless they meet all of the qualifications. Don't let this hold you back! Also, remember that many companies these days look for potential, not just current skillsets. And critical thinking and problem-solving skills are making a comeback.

Thank you comment icon Hi Dina, Thank you for the additional information, I will remember that when I start applying for jobs. Kristin

April’s Answer

Hi Kristin! It has historically been challenging for women in tech, however I have found over the last 5 years or so that companies are learning the real value of a diverse workforce and making real changes to hiring practices. They are also working toward creating a more supportive work environment. I've worked in tech for 20 years and I will be honest I questioned my choice a couple times. I am SUPER happy at my current company because of their commitment to diversity and inclusion. It is an awesome field with so many options and SO many directions you can take. Definitely check out the resources sited by Karen, they are great especially anitab.org.

April recommends the following next steps:

When you start looking for a position, target the company(s) you want to work for.
Research companies and find the ones who demonstrate commitment to diversity and inclusion. (Small to medium businesses do this better.)
Once you get in the door be a part of the solution. Support other women, mentor, and build them up.

Karen’s Answer

In a way it has gotten easier as companies are working harder to get more diversity in their ranks. That includes more women, people of color, and people with different abilities.

The challenge, especially with women, is keeping them in the technology workforce. Many environments still have a strong male bias and many very talented women choose to leave technology, opting for more women friendly workplaces or departments that don't include technology.

The good news is there are many more places for women to turn for support and guidance. Women in Tech and STEM communities are growing and technology firms are taking more notice. Find a Lean In (leanin.org) circle near you or check in at the Anita B. org (anitab.org) to learn more about women in technology. Get involved in education groups like Black Girls Code (http://www.blackgirlscode.com/) for a friendly learning environment. Dig around the Internet for "women in tech" and you'll find many other helpful and supportive resources, including lists of women-friendly firms that will welcome all qualified job applicants!

There's still a glass ceiling for Women in Tech, but many amazing women are crashing through it every day!

Karen recommends the following next steps:

Search the Internet for "Women in Technology" and find some interesting organizations and communities to join.
Join at least one community.
Sign up for a newsletter from other women in tech oriented sites.

Krystal’s Answer

It is getting easier to enter in the technology field as a woman with more women becoming leaders in this space as well. I am involved in PwC's Women in Technology group and you can get involved in your local coummunity on this website. I would lean into their networking events and meet new people who can help mentor you personally in this field!

Ashi’s Answer

Women in tech are definitely high in demand. I would also recommend joining groups in college that are women communities. Companies sponsor clubs such as these and often have events directly intended to higher people from these clubs.
Thank you comment icon Hi Ashi! Could you explain in more detail what you mean by women being in high demand? I'm curious if you feel that this is something people in tech are just saying, or if the environment has genuinely become more welcoming to women. Alexandra Carpenter, Admin

Mila’s Answer

Diversity is big these days in tech, there probably couldn't be better time to be talking to people in the industry. A lot of companies are looking for women who not only join as a workforce but be the leaders in the movement and lead by example. So definitely get involved, and don't be afraid to advocate for other women in the beginning of their career.
