What are a few ways to get in state tuition if you don't happen to live in the state at the moment?

So I live in Illinois where colleges are super expensive. I am all in for going out of my way to save money, but I am not sure what the best way to do it would be. I've heard that if my house was under my dad's name, then I could rent a place in North Carolina and have the apartment under my mom's name, but her paycheck would have to go towards that. I've also heard that I could choose to not go to school my first year after high school, and move there to gain my residency and just work that year. Anyways, I have not come up with more than that so if you have any ideas or happen to like or not like one of the ideas I said, I appreciate any input to help me on saving money. Thank you for your time. #Mymoney #Savingmoney

Are you using North Carolina just as an example, or, is that the state where you want to go to school? If not, what states are on your list? I came across the rules for establishing residency in Texas once before, so I imagine other states have similar info on - line.

If you are looking to move to NC residency is determined by where the source of the money that pays your bills comes from. As you said in your original post your parent would be paying for your rent (and possibly more than that) and in that case you could not gain residency. Each state has different rules and some schools even waive out-of-state tuition costs, so definitely look at the state you would like to go to school in rules as well as looking at the schools website/financial aid information or contacting the school's financial aid office to see if they offer out-of-state waivers.
