How do you choose the right major for you?

I've heard that many people change their major once they enter college, so I want to know more about how to choose a major to begin with.

Hi Annette,

A great way to find a major is to take courses that interest you or you think will help prepare you for a career you are interested in. Once you try a certain class you may find yourself being interested in taking other classes in the same major.

Hey, this is a great question. I initially went to school for nursing, then switched to community health(AS) and psychology(BA). Turns out, the nursing world is very competitive as many millennial and baby boomers became nurses. Also I want to work hands on with the people, advocating and helping them improve their lives. Everyone is different. You have to look at majors and than careers available with that major and whether or not you will have to pursue a Masters or Phd afterwards, unless you can which is great. Lastly, look on job sites to check availability of these positions. Google the careers with ;salary range' and your state, 'in California.' If you have advisers at your school they can also provide good information.

Elizabeth recommends the following next steps:

Take Princeton Review's career test: https://www.princetonreview.com/quiz/career-quiz
Look up courses required for your top three majors and see which classes interest you the most.
