Can my state (Georgia) academic scholarship be used for other colleges out of georgia?

Many have told me that scholarships given by the state can only be used in colleges in the state. I had questions if this was true because some colleges near georgia might be able to take my scholarship. #collegebound #scholarships

Hi Jose,

This is a great question. It looks like it varies depending on the specific scholarship, but it should be stated in the scholarship description itself. Check out in the link in Next Steps to take a look at some of the Gerogia specific scholarships. Wishing you all the best!

I agree with the previous comments. Please research the scholarship, as someone who lives in GA, they do have scholarship for certain things that are GA specific. Some scholarships or grants are based on other specifics. Research what you are about to accept, it could effect where you attend college or how much college debt you will attain.

Hello!

So depending on what your scholarship is for and if it pertains to your specific state will depend if you can transfer the scholarship. I would get in touch with specific schools that you plan on attending/are interested in attending to make sure that it can be used towards your tuition. There are also other academic scholarships that other schools have as well so I would look into those as well!

Hi Jose,

I'm not sure about state scholarships in Georgia that can be used outside of the state, generally state money is intended to stay within the state. I do caution you, though, if you get offered scholarships, I'd recommend you do everything to keep it. Today, with the amount of student debt currently over most graduates' heads, it is becoming more and more important to choose practicality over pomp. It may seem great going to a big-name, prestigious school, but the money and potential debt that goes along with it is truly not worth it. Speaking as someone with a hefty chunk of student debt myself, you will get just as good of an education, for half, a third, and sometimes a quarter the cost of a "big" school. If you get offered a great deal of scholarships, that is amazing, but don't overlook the cost-effective schools for the "prestige" that supposedly comes with an $80,000 price tag on your diploma.
