Hi D´Aarez,
To be a real estate agent, you don't need a degree from a four-year university, keyword there being need. However, it's important to know that because degrees are becoming more and more common, it's good to have one to cover your bases:
You can major in real estate at some schools, which starts you well on your way to becoming a broker (the one who manages all the real estate agents). If you don't want to major, you could take a few classes and see if the state waives the classes it normally would require you to take.
It's a good idea to have some knowledge of business, marketing, economics, and law. To succeed in the field, this is a good starting point to learn what you're going to be dealing with.
Work with buyers and sellers. When it comes to housing, there are two types of people: buyers and sellers. In order to maximum your list of clients, you need to work with both. Simple logic. Hopefully your broker deals with both ends of the spectrum -- more commission for you!
It´s important to Join the NAR. If you want to become a realtor , you have to join the National Association of Realtors (the National Realtor Association didn't abbreviate quite right). It basically comprises of you working with a broker who's affiliated with them, paying dues, and attending a certain number of meetings a month. Not hard work! In return, you'll get the status of Realtor, which will give you an air of professionalism and trustworthiness to tote behind your name.

First, let's make sure you understand the vernacular.
A realtor is someone that has a real estate license (sales or broker) and belongs to the National Association of REALTORS.
OK, having said that, in CA, you need to take classes either online or in person and then sit for the test.
But, that really does not prepare you for the day-to-day activities of an agent. You need to be with a company that understands what you will need to be successful.
Like everyone, you will have your circle of friends nd family that you will start with, but you need to know what you're doing in order to help them.
Figure out which way you want to learn and find someone that you get along with that is ethical and intelligent and learn from them!
Best of luck
Fred
