Becoming a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher, I want to know whether its better to teach middle or high school?

Im going into my third year of college, and I'm debating whether I should teach middle school or High school when I finish. I know there are pros and cons pertaining to each grade level but Im afraid that if i teach middle, they won't fully grasp the material or lesson.

Hi Tria! Like Matthew stated, it would be best for you to get some experience in both areas before coming to that conclusion. At my university, I have to attend four levels of internships, where they try to make sure our experiences are as wide of a range as possible. If your school does not offer this, you should try either volunteering or substitute teaching at different levels to get a feel for the students and their behaviors. If you're worried about middle schoolers not grasping the lesson, then you will just have to simplify the concepts enough to where they do! I don't know much about consumer sciences, so if this is easier said than done, then my apologies! But ultimately, it is going to come down to your preference. Personally, I prefer the high school level, as I find it easier to connect with and relate to the students. However, I have had friends who say the exact opposite, and that middle school is their niche. I hope this advice helps!

Matthew’s Answer

You can definitely get more in detail with high school students than in middle school, but I'd encourage you to get some experience at both kinds of schools. What may end up mattering the most to you--as it did for me--was the kinds of relationships you're able to form.

Matthew recommends the following next steps:

Look for volunteer opportunities at a middle school AND a high school
Become a substitute or a guest lecturer for a current science teacher, and see how the students respond to you.
