Ashley’s Answer

Hi Damian! I am currently a Law Student that just finished my second year. One of the great things about law school is that it does not require a particular undergraduate major. I would suggest picking a course of study that will challenge you to think critically. It might also be useful for you to select a major that relates to any particular field of law that you are interested in.

Ben’s Answer

Dear Damian,

As unsatisfying as this answer is, you can be a lawyer with any major. If there is anything -- I mean anything! -- that interests you, you should study it. Being an expert in anything (animals, pipelines, buildings, landscaping) could potentially help you as a lawyer.

That said, I will tell you that I believe my background in journalism has been a great asset in my relatively short (going on three years) career in the law. In college, I learned how to write and how to research. It helps in law school to be a good writer. And my researching skills have carried over into the jobs I've had since graduating law school (research and writing assistant to judges and litigator). Any field that involves writing and researching (which is a LOT of fields) could be helpful.

Sincerely,

Ben
