Hi Larissa! Great question. As with all nurses, you should first have compassion. Never forget why you wanted to become a nurse! Monkeys can be taught to stick on a bandaid but it takes caring & desire to put effort into a sick stranger. As for NICU nursing, you’ll need to be able to work under stress, be task oriented, know when your patient needs high level care & when to be alarmed, team player, & astute in ICU equipment. Lastly, you have to be able to take on the emotional turmoil as babies are very easy to get attached to. You have to know when to let go.
Take any ICU internship
Pursue L&D and/or pediatrics
Become certified in your specialty

You’ll hear the normal answers; kind, compassion... etc.
But I’d say know your drugs. Know math. Know pathophysiology. Don’t forget the famous incident where Dennis Quade’s twins received the wrong dose of heparin.
If my child were in the NICU, I don’t want a soppy crying ‘compassionate’ nurse. I want a tough as nails, smart as hell, knows Medicine, drugs, pathophysiology and will fight for my child in providing the absolute best and most excellent care.
