Are dual credit classes or AP classes better for preparing for college?

Both are ok approaches. If dual credit includes actually physically going to the college to take a course (some do, not all though), then that's obviously the better choice. Since it's, you know, actually college.
I'd see if programs like that are available and feasible, e.g.: http://onramps.utexas.edu/initiatives/dcic/

My children participated in AP classes and many of them were eligible for dual credit for the same course. I urged them to do both, as suggested above, to take advantage of all options.

Both are excellent college preparation. I would suggest signing up for and paying for the dual credit class. Then at the end of the year, I would suggest still taking the AP exam. That way, you can look at your university's policy toward these credits and choose whichever is the most favorable.
