When I enroll in college, should I have morning classes or classes later in the day?

I am not a morning person but I have heard that having morning classes can come with benefits. What do you guys think?

What are the benefits of morning classes? We need more information please.

If you are not a morning person, you will have difficulty concentrating and focusing on the lectures. You might even have problems getting to class on time, if you get there at all. I worked a midnight shift my senior year, and thought I could go straight from work to school. But I had a little spare time before my first class started. I found a place to take a nap, and woke up halfway through my second class! Those two classes were two of the five C's I got for my entire 4 years of school. If you are not a morning person, I'd recommend nothing earlier than 9:30 a.m. Also watch your diet, making sure to get some early morning protein, and avoid the ups and downs of vending machine diets.

Hi Hayley,

Really good question. So during my four years of college I never took any 8:00 AM courses, 9:35 AM classes were my earliest. If I were to take 8:00 AM classes that meant that I would have to be up at 6:30 and there was no way in this universe that I was going to be able to do that. Sure, there is a benefit of getting classes done with early so that you have the rest of the day to do things, but if you aren't even able to wake up in time for your early morning classes then it is not worth the cost. I would try and take classes between 9-4 because those are core hours that your brain will be at its best. I found it difficult to take classes after 5 PM as I wanted to eat dinner and start studying. It was really only in my last year of college that I was successfully able to take classes after 5 PM.

When creating your schedule you need to do what is best for you; if there are particular times that do not work well with how you operate then don't take classes at those times. Forcing yourself during your freshman year to be an "early riser" may be a good idea in theory but it could impact your grades if you are not up for the challenge.

I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck!!

Best,

Austin

P.S. now that I am working I have to get up before 6 AM often, definitely learned to be an early riser
