Is it too late to switch majors after your first year of college?

I am enrolling in college in August but am kind of unsure what I want to do. If I choose a major and I end up not liking it by my first year is it too late to change it?

Sumer’s Answer

It is never too late to switch majors, I experienced the same feeling my first couple years. I started out with a degree in psychology and then I found a degree in nutrition that I wanted to follow instead. I was happy and thrilled to make the change and if I could do it all over again I would do the same change. Keep following your heart and dreams.

Hi Haley: I can relate to your question because I was in a similar situation. I actually became a Career Counselor because I graduated with an English degree and Education minor. I thought I wanted to teach elementary school, but when it came time to work in the classroom with the teacher to get qualified and certified I realized that I didn't like teaching in the same classroom with the same students, because I finally knew then that I needed more variety in my day. Everyday seemed the same and that became boring to me.

So there I was left with a BA degree and not knowing what to do with it. I took a job in a bank because I thought it would give me more variety on the job and it did. Then I was introduced to Career Assessments and took some of those to get a feedback on what I should do with my life and career. I found out it is never too late to change your major. I went back into a graduate program for  Career counseling due to the fact that the assessments that I took showed that Counseling  and Psychology was one of my interests, and since I worked in the bank my job was counseling people on each of the different types of accounts. I loved it and knew that!! So I pursued the process of taking all the classes that I needed for Career Counseling Certification and it took me almost 3 years going to school part time and working at a Career Center in a high school. I was getting education and experience It was great and I felt that I had found what I really wanted to do. So REMEMBER IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO PURSUE WHAT YOU WANT AND MAYBE GET SOME CAREER COUNSELING ANDTAKE SOME ASSESSMENTS TO FIND OUT WHAT IT IS THAT YOU REALLY WANT TO DO. Many people change their choice in major after the 1st or 2nd year of college and do just fine and even can graduate in a timely manner, but first you have to find out what that major might be. PLEASE FOLLOW WHAT MY SUGGESTIONS ARE FOR YOU AND I AM SURE YOU WILL LIKE THE OUTCOME. YOUR LIFE WILL BE CHANGED FOREVER AFTER YOU TAKE THE PROPER ASSESSMENTS. I WISH YOU THE BEST IN YOUR SEARCH AND HOP YOU FIND YOUR DESIRED MAJOR.

Carole recommends the following next steps:

Some assessments can be found on the internet, but it is better for you to check in with your school and visit the Career Center and talk with a Career Counselor after you have taken some interest assessments and personality assessments, both very important for you to find the best career for you.
