Are the aspects of finding one's authenticity while in college, depending on their major always the right way to go, or should that be based on the ideals of their own character?

Yvonne’s Answer

Hello Alyssa,

In the working environment you are constantly working with or are considered as part of team to produce or drive business results. This concept is not far from the college environment where you will be exposed to a variety of teams. To have the best experience or results you need to bring your best self into the group and that entails being true to yourself or being authentic. The process of storming, forming and norming will work if each team member is honest and answers questions based on their frame of reference . I found that when I answered questions honestly or presented information based on my discipline that my team was more accepting of my contributions, than if I tried to present information that was beyond my expertise. To improve as an authentic leader I need to be true to my values (Kahn, 2010). In every circumstance you want to gain the trust and followership leading thorough your values so that others can perceive you as authentic.

Yvonne recommends the following next steps:

Live through your values by your behaviors or actions.
Seek feedback regularly on your engagement and interactions .

Ria’s Answer

I believe that your "authenticity" comes from a sum of your academic and social experiences in college. You want to make sure that you are pursuing your authentic interests, even if that takes some time discover, You also want to make sure that you are being authentic when interacting with others, as you will be able to develop real relationships with others. Being fake or trying to pretend to be someone else to fit in isn't the best move. Find people that can support your growth in college, both academically and socially, and you will have a great college experience. :)
