What is the best resource for first generation nursing students?

With there being such a nursing shortage throughout the country, where should I look to get additional financial and academic support for a first generation nursing student? While the demand for nurses is high, the competition for acceptance is fierce. What kind of organizations or volunteer opportunities would be most beneficial for a nurse-to-be?

I would suggest contacting local professional nursing organizations such as NANN (National Association of Neonatal Nurses) or AWHONN (I forget what the acronym stands for, but I know that it deals with obstetrics and gynecology). These are organizations of nurses from all over the area and they can guide students and graduates in the industry. Some of the organizations meet on a regular basis and they can offer suggestions to get you started.

Hi Kayla!

Great question! One of the best resources I used and starting off in nursing school was KhanAcademy. I used in for my ADN, BSN and my MSN. Great resource to help you understand topic in a different format. It requires you to sign up with an email but its free. I hope this is helpful!
