Specific Business Fields
I will be studying business at Marist College, but although I know I want to do something in business, I'm not sure what field of business to go into. How do I know what field of business would be best for me? #business

Alexander, in addition to these I would loudly Echo experience, which to a lesser degree your basic core classes will provide. A general business degree will start the exposure of HR, General management, Project Management, Data analysis, Finance, etc. I would find the one you enjoyed the most and start to pursue intern opportunities associated with it to see if you could do it long term, they all have positives and they all have draw-backs.
I would have told you a decade ago that I could not stand the idea of plugging away at numbers all day…..until I did it (;

Hi Alexander: This is always a difficult question unless your have some type of knowledge within the business structure and experience of what you would like to do and what skills that you have or would like to have. I will give you a few ideas in how you can find out a little more about yourself and then discover the right part of the business career that appeals to you. Here are some ideas: #1 At your college of choice I am sure that the school has a Career Center on campus. If so you should visit that career center and make an appointment to take some of there Career Assessments that they offer. These will give you an idea of what area of business you might like to study by the way you answer the questions . I would suggest taking an Interest Assessment and a Personality Assessment, These two assessments will help you define an area in which you will be the happiest working in. You can also take a skills assessment and values assessment if available. #2. Volunteer in an office situation maybe through your school or other businesses. #3. If you can find a part-time job while you are in school or in the summer months in an office environment that would be the best exposure for you to see how you like it. #4. You can also apply for an internship through your school or through the classified ads or the job boards at your school. #5. Sometimes the school as a Business type of Club or Organization and that would also be helpful for you to join. #6. If you know someone with whom you are comfortable with and like what they work at, you might want to ask them if you can shadow them during the day (while they are working) just to get an idea of what this person does during the working hours. #7 You will always learn more with the 3 E's this is my motto: Exposure, Experience, and Education!! I hope these ideas have helped get more of perspective on what you should pursue at this point. I wish you the best in your Career Search!!
