Shay’s Answer

If you are a fashion student this can be best answered through your career dept at your school.

If not, you will need to have a resume to support your interest in being a fashion intern.

Most of internships are during the summer months but some companies do "co-ops" with design schools that offer then year round to support the co-opperative intern program.

Hope this helps!

Internships are everywhere. Depending on where you live just type in fashion design internships in whatever state and you'll probably have over a thousand hits. Surf through them and pick a few to write to . Keep in mind it may take a few months to hear back since most internships happen during the summer.

Emilia J.’s Answer

Speaking with your school's career advisor will be a great start towards finding out what internship opportunities there are, as well as what online platform or job portals are available for you to use. You can also ask your teachers if they know any students who would love to talk about their internship experiences at a particular fashion design company. You can also ask if they are able to provide a contact for you to ask for any opportunities.

What you need to keep in mind is that most internships involves you running a lot of errands for the team to make their jobs run smoothly. But, as per PickGlass.com's advice on "How To Go From Fashion Intern to Full Time Employee":

"To be a rockstar intern to [sic] have to take initiative! Keep your ears open for things that need to be done and speak up! Offer to do it. Constantly ask what else you can do to help. If you do find that you have downtime make your own list of small tasks that you can do either to improve your skills or make your new coworkers’ lives easier."

I have worked with fashion designers who mentioned to me how they try to give small design projects to their interns when they notice their positive and "can-do" attitude!

Emilia J. recommends the following next steps:

Speak with your school's career advisor on internship opportunities. Also, ask about online job portals that advertises internship opportunities for students!
Speak with students who have interned at design companies you are interested in interning at - ask about their experience and what they learned from there!
When you land your dream internship, keep using your initiative! Find ways in how you can help your co-workers (even when they don't instruct you with tasks).
