What do I need to do if I want to work in the development or research of pharmaceuticals?

I’m currently majoring in Chemical Engineering. If I want to work with pharmaceuticals in the future, should I pick a concentration? At my university, the concentrations are materials, environmental, and bio molecular. Is medical school required?

Saroj’s Answer

pharma is a great industry with a wide variety of opportunities. Depending on your interest, you can do an internship in manufacturing or in drug development. You can also look at Medical Affairs and Clinical Development. Most big pharma companies will have these divisions. I would suggest to start looking at openings and see the job descriptions to get an idea of types of roles and responsibilities. Best of luck. You will do great.

I would also start by reaching out to professors. They oftentimes need to be doing research themselves or may know of a research opportunity with a colleague. I didn’t realize until late into my 6 year pharmacy program that building relationships with professors could help, so start early! Research and development positions/internships will value any experience you have!
