Sabrina’s Answer

With a degree in Business you can do almost anything! I have to say I am so grateful I majored in Business (Concentration in Marketing) as it has given me the ability to change career paths multiple times. All through college I had one career path in-mind. My senior year I got an internship to help me towards that career and during that time I realized that was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. So, where to then? Because I majored in Business, I had so many opportunities and wasn’t pigeon-holed into one field. My degree has not held me back from exploring different industries and positions. In my 18 years since graduation I have had 3 completely different jobs (media manager at an ad agency, travel agent, assistant at a financial firm) and enjoyed all of them. None of which I would have worked towards or thought I would want to do when I was in the midst college.

I highly recommend a business major to anyone who either isn’t sure what they want to do after college, or for anyone who knows they will want to explore different opportunities and not do “one thing” for their entire career. I’ve heard various statistics along the lines of “xx% of jobs existing 20 years from now do not exist today.” A Business degree gives you a wonderful base knowledge of the world, how to work in teams, and much more that can prepare you for those future jobs we don’t anticipate. It is a completely flexibly degree that can take you anywhere you want to go – and to many exciting places you don’t even know you want to go!

JR’s Answer

I asked myself the same question when I graduated! I have been able to use my degree to do non profit work as a volunteer manager in advocating on issues important to a variety of diverse communities. I have to always sell the cause, sell the organization to recruit volunteers, and have to be able to manage people.

JR recommends the following next steps:

Internship
Find your area of passion
Shadow someone who does something your might be interested in doing
