Hi Ann! A close friend of mine is a music therapist, so I'll be able to help you out with this! Some music therapists do start in a hospital; my friend personal did not! She got her to start interning for counseling therapists near her university. After graduation, she was able to work out of that therapist's office! Until she recently opened her practice! What's important to take away from this that I have shared with you is that you do not have to do things the traditional way, explore as many avenues to your dream as possible! Build positive and helpful relationships with those in the field that you aspire to be a part of, and most importantly go for it!

Where you start out as a music therapist is completely up to you and the job market available in your area. As a music therapist, I personally work in the public school system with students with special needs, but I have had experience working in a hospital. Music therapists typically choose a population they prefer working with to decide where to begin their career. This can sometimes mean they begin in a hospital, but it can also mean you begin working in a nursing home. Music therapists work with clients across the entire lifespan, so I would encourage you to research some music therapists in your community to know where they work and what they do.
If you are looking to begin a major in music therapy in college and want to work in a hospital as a music therapist down the line, I would look into the staff of the child life department of the hospital as that is typically where they house the music therapists. Hopefully that was helpful! Best of luck on your journey!
