What classes should I take to become a maternity nurse?
Are there specific minors that are needed or do you just get a BSN and apply for that job? #high-school-jobs #collegecourses #nursing #nurse #medicine #college

Hi Valerie, While you are in nursing school you will probably have a Labor and Delivery rotation which will expose you to the world of Maternity nursing. After nursing school or in your last year of school you might be able to find a hospital that has nurse externs working in their maternity department. That's a great way to begin observing, asking questions, practicing. Another option are hospitals that have residency programs after graduation from nursing school with labor and delivery as one of the options of that program. In the hospital where I work there are also nurses who have some med-surg experience who transfer into our labor and delivery/postpartum unit. Good luck in your pursuit of your BSN in nursing. Nursing is a wonderful career with many options for growth and development! Jane

To work in maternity or any field of nursing, you would obtain your associates or bachelor's degree. I would suggest trying to get an internship or nurse extern position while in school on the desired unit. Working in one of these positions will help when applying to those speciality units like maternity, ER, or ICU. Hope this helps!
