Can I get a job in the music industry with an economics degree?

How likely is it for me to be able to gain employment in the music industry with an economics degree? I figure there are lots of opportunities for that degree to be useful in such a market run industry.. Just wondering! #music #music-industry #economics

Hi Mehika! The good news is, there's no formal qualifications to be in the music business. The bad news? Anybody can be in the music business! BTW I'm not actually joking, this is 100 percent true.

Seriously though, an economics degree would probably be useful, but maybe in some indirect ways. You understand numbers well and may mean you already have some ability or business acumen. As a manager or producer, understanding budgets is a huge benefit! And understanding market forces as you build a career can give you an edge in certain circumstances.

Or in a bit more bland career path, you could work at a record label or streaming services in their royalties or accounting departments. Still very needed, just maybe not as sexy as being an artist manager or tour producer!

In a nutshell, almost any degree can be useful in the music business, if you do it right. Good luck!

You can be in the music industry with no degree and no penny in your pocket. Music industry is 99% who you know, and 1% skills/knowledge. If you know 100 people who are actively working in the industry and who like you and know you can bring the goods, you will find that you constantly have work. Of course that's a big number, but having an econ degree doesn't contribute one towards it. A lot of internships and opening jobs like to see that people have degrees as an arbitrary way of throwing out resumes, but if you have someone vouching for you then your resume doesn't matter much at all for getting your foot in the door.

If you go out and set up a bunch of informational interviews, buy people a cup of coffee, and smile, you can find your way in with time.

Actually there are more chances for you getting a job in the music industry than musicians! You could earn a masters degree in music management or music business or get to work straight away! Some of the jobs that you can do are: manager for musicians, accountant for a music business, finance advisor for a music business and many many similar jobs.Even musicians with finance degrees tend to have more possibilities of getting a job in the industry due to their management and organizational skills.Hope that helps!
