Ashley’s Answer

Hey Ryan! Most jobs look for people who have some sort of experience, whether it's a job, internship, or organization. I would suggest getting involved in campus organizations while in college and then get an internship as an upperclassman. Getting involved on campus will help you stand out when applying for internships. Having an internship allows you to get real-world experience and apply what you learned in the classroom to your field. These experiences will help you get the relevant job experience you'll need when applying for jobs once you graduate.

Ashley recommends the following next steps:

Get involved on campus by joining a student organization related to your field
Get an internship after your first year of college

Yes, getting any level of experience will be a great boon in helping you land a job post-graduation. It automatically pulls you out of the large bucket of people applying for positions with no background at all. Also, you will have the opportunity to make a positive impression at the company so you can try to land a job with the same company post-graduation or use the employees as resources when looking for job openings that others might not have heard of.

Austin’s Answer

Hey Ryan!

Getting experience through internships are extremely important before graduating. Professionally, having experience helps build up your resume to show employers that you have done enough work to make you qualified for the job. It's really important to build your resume up so that when you approach your senior year you are prepared to apply for entry-level positions after college.

Also, personally, it's important to get internships so that you can find out what jobs you enjoy. One of the biggest things you can learn from internships is which ones work for you and also which ones "don't." Establishing the two is big in order to get a good idea of what you would like to do after college since it'll be something where you spend most of your time doing.
