Should I get a job/internship in my first year of college?

Should I focus on just doing well in my academics and making connections, or work during the school year? And if I did work would a job or internship be better?

Mitchell’s Answer

Hi Anthony,
A lot of companies offer summer internships. If you aren't planning on taking summer courses, a summer internship could be the ideal situation. It will allow you to gain relevant work experience in your field, while not taking away from your courses. The internship will also allow you to evaluate if it's the right field / industry / type of work you want to be doing.

M. A. Rafe’s Answer

You can, but depends on your financial situation. If you have enough to make it through the 1st year, then become a full time student and network with professionals/ faculty because good grades can get you scholarships for following years and networking could land you a summer job/internship after completing 1st year. If you can't and do have to work, I recommend getting a job or internship that is related to your field if possible so it can count towards your experience to put on your resume.

Simeon’s Answer

If you are able to land an internship during your first year, you should try to do so. As long as you have only a slight decrease in your grades, this investment will be a solid pay-off in your future. The experience you get and the professional contacts you make will be of great assistance to you once you start off on your initial job search and probably beyond that as well.
