Ann’s Answer

Hi Neijha,

I honestly recommend starting at the bottom. To get into higher level roles within restaurant and hospitality, it's extremely important to understand how to do the customer facing roles. So I would recommend starting out in serving, guest services, front desk work or card dealing to get your foot in the door.

Once it comes time for your internship, you will be able to get into the business side of things. I started out as a hostess, then worked my way up to server and bartender and ultimately became a trainer before switching to another industry. The other route would be to go into book keeping, but there isn't a lot of opportunity to move up from there.

I hope this helps!

You are lucky to live in Florida! There are so many amazing opportunities to work in the Hospitality industry. (this is going to make me seem super old). When I was in college, there wasn't a major for Hospitality Management. But, I really wanted to work for Walt Disney World. I ended up getting a job at my local Disney store and worked my way up. Start off at a Resort hotel, theme park, restaurant and just learn everything you can. Network with anyone and everyone. I like to tell my Cast to imagine a ladder. At the top of that ladder is your ultimate job. Are you taking the steps in an upward direction to reach that goal? As you continue to take each step on that ladder, your ultimate job may change. That's okay! Just keep moving forward & keep your eyes open to other ideas as your climb.
