There are many pros and cons and a lot of them have been listed, but I would add that you need to figure out how to leave work at work and not take it home-this is not an easy thing to do. You also need to understand that in a lot of situations you are simply planting a seed for future development, not solving all their problems during your involvement with them. It is a very rewarding career, but you need clear appropriate expectations going in. You can make a huge difference for people, but if you have to be careful that you don't do it at a huge costs you. Self care is one of the most important things for a social worker to focus on, even if that seems contradictory in nature. You can't save others if you run out of oxygen-make sure you put your mask on first!
