How long will it take to pay for student loans with the salary of a dental hygienist?

Long story short, I am currently pursuing dental hygiene in a very expensive private university because the state I live in does not offer many options for me to pursue this degree. One school has a lot of pre-requisites that I did not take when I first went to college and the other has a five-year program for an associate's degree instead of a two year one. I already used up all the financial aid I can get from my previous degree in but I really want to work in dental. I know that dental hygiene makes decent income, how will it take to pay 90k of student loans with a dental hygienist's salary? #dental-hygienist #dental #studentloans

Thomas’s Answer

(I'm not in dentistry, but my daughter is a hygienist). As Ms. Gordon-Fulse mentions, if you budget carefully, you should be able to repay the loans in a few years. My understanding is that hygienists in NY can expect to earn more than $45 an hour, so that a full-time gig gets you over $90,000 per year. Assuming you're very careful with your spending and saving, it's feasible to get out from under that debt before too long.

Naomi’s Answer

How much student loan debt would you incur for the Dental Hygienist program? The average 4 year program is $36K. The average salary is $72,000. If you live on a budget you should be able to pay off they student loans in a year or two. You would have to be very intentional to do this though. I had student loans and took a long to pay for it, in hindsight I could have paid it off quickly.

Naomi recommends the following next steps:

Create a budget and set goals to pay off the student loans. Get a few jobs so that you don't need to incur the debt.
