The short answer is no, you don't have to, but if you can it will certainly help. Technically all you need to be a fitness trainer is a certification, which you may be able to get while working at a fitness center. However, a degree in sports medicine or physical therapy would enable you to access higher paid positions and a wider variety of career options.

There are differences between a fitness trainer and an athletic trainer but if you wanted to become a fitness trainer, you don't need to go to college or earned a degree. But, people with associate or bachelor's degree can also become a fitness trainer! Thus, earning a college degree or going to college is not a prerequisite to becoming a fitness trainer. You just need on the job training from a fitness center or Sports Medicine Center. certainly you can work right away as a fitness trainer provided you get certified first. I believe current trends required by fitness centers is that all fitness trainers need to get certified.
The big difference is, if you wanted to become an athletic trainer! To become an athletic trainer, you must have earned either a bachelor's or master's degree prior to becoming Certified as an athletic trainer, then you'll have an additional ATC title after your name! I hope this helps you decide your career path.
