You can't do anything without a piece of paper basically stating you paid money to prove you know how to do it. #college

Hi Desiree, I have heard that same question before... from my daughter who said the same thing to me when she was in high school. My daughter graduated from Arizona State University in May. And, she learned in her 4 years at ASU... that she does not know everything... and that there is still so much more to learn. THAT is one of the many benefits of college -- to become a life-long learner.

The piece of paper you pay for to get a college degree is so worth it... (I also can't hire you or anyone else who does not have a college degree. )

Hi Desiree M. I see that you posted this question a little while ago so I hope my answer to you (or others who may read this response) is still helpful.

For young people who are seeking to build a career, I too believe, that it is vitally important to be a life-long learner. That phrase, "life-long learner", may seem a bit weird for students who haven't even finished high school. I am using the phrase to indicate more of an interest than a set of classes. Specifically, even the richest, most successful members of society will admit that they still have so much to learn. When individuals take the initiative to learn something new it is of great benefit to that individual and to the people who that individual interacts with. Oftentimes, college is a great milestone to building an interest in life-long learning.

In a more practical sense your "piece of paper" is what recruiters in all areas of hiring need to determine if individuals are a suitable fit for jobs that are available. Without it, there is very little to go on for recruiters and in a world where teams of recruiters and human resources specialists have to find candidates from a pile of (sometimes) thousands, no "piece of paper" means an individual won't get considered.

Attending a college/university can be a very enriching experience. I include myself as one of the lucky ones for many of the professors that taught me and the life-long friendships I have made. Some campuses offer historic context that can also be helpful in learning.

I do hope that my answers on what going to college can bring to the life of a student are helpful. Best of luck to you!
