What is the first step in getting into the writing scene for Film and TV?

I want to know where to start first and who to make connections with. I feel like internships are important but I'm not sure what exactly I should be shooting for. My college is close to New York City which opens up a lot of opportunities. #film #college #career-path #writing #tv

It depends on what you are looking to write about. What kind of scenes interest you? I think before writing you should do a lot of watching of film and TV to get an idea of where you want to go and analyze how the scene is created. There are also a lot of Youtube channels out there that do videos on these things.

Cerrisa D. It is so exciting and heart-warming to know that you want to be a screenwriter. All through high school, that is what I wanted to be but than changed to Acting when I got to college.

My first suggestion : write every single day. When you have a body of work to send out you can start sending screenplays/plays to notices in The Writer https://www.writermag.com/ , a magazine I used many years ago that is still around today.

The next thing, and you're half way there, is that it's a hard fact, but you'll have to either live in New York City or Los Angeles. If you want a serious entertainment industry career , there' no choice. It's either L.A. or NY. I lived in both and L.A. seemed to actually have an abundance of opportunity compared to NY. However, we are getting fortunate that more studios and productions are slowly returning to New York. Also, now with the internet, I imagine writers can live anywhere.

Definitely take Playwriting in college . I loved my course and did very well in it. It was awesome. The first semester is when we actually wrote and the final consisted of writing a three act play. (And there was no internet than or PCs). During the next semester it was a symposium at which all of our plays were read for the class. That was great. It ended up that the professor said that out of all the plays, mine would be the one that would sell/was the most commercial because it is the most unique and different.

If you network/hang out with people in the theatre or television fields or college majors, you will see that you will be provided a wealth of information about opportunities. Someone will mention that a new theatre is looking for new plays. Another person will know of a job opening at a TV studio, etc. There's no real definite way to "Break in" . One must simply take the practical steps toward it. It gets easier as time goes on.

Best wishes in your college and career endeavors !
