Here are my keys:
- Download a local map.
- Walk to your classes before the first day so that you’ll know where they are
- Unless told in the syllabus, don’t get a book until after the first class. Many profs will tell you that it’s optional.
- If you need to buy the book, buy it used.
- If you have to buy it new, try to find it online and print it out yourself.
- Buy a microwave if you can in your dorm.
- Talk to people and make friends prior to the week. If there’s an orientation, go to it.
- Find the local theater and check ticket prices. In most college towns, movies are half off with an ID.
- Enjoy yourself! You’re in college and it’s scary but you now have more freedom than you will for the rest of your life!

As Clay mentioned, steps 1-6 are definitely critical! He also mentioned joining and participating in welcome activities - those are huge too. I won't expand on anything else Clay already mentioned, but I will add that it is important to stay calm and not let yourself get overwhelmed. The amount of reading your professors may assign, class sizes, content, etc. can seem intense, especially the first semester. Just know that you were accepted into the school because you have the skillsets you need to succeed. You will learn how best to study and handle the work as you get into your new routine, so don't let it overwhelm you the first week or two. There are also lots of resources available to you, so if you feel that happening, use those resources and allow them to help you. Good luck!
