What are the main factors to consider when deciding between becoming a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), and how do these choices impact career opportunities and personal fulfillment?

Hi, I'm Angela, a junior becoming a senior in August. I'm having a dilemma about which route I want to take to become a midwife. Originally, I was going to go the CPM route, going straight into it after high school, but I'm worried if I'll have any employment when I get my certification. I don't want to go through the CNM route, but if it means steady employment, I might have to. I love everything about Labor & Delivery, women's health, and the concept of being able to choose where to give birth. It would be really helpful if someone could share their perspective on what led them to become a CPM or CNM, and what the process was like for them.

A good question indeed
The Certified nurse midwife...is a profession that requires basically a nursing degree and licence to practice, they mostly practice in hospital and delivery homes to improve the health and wellbeing of pregnant women and their babies,so it takes a great time and effort to be a CNM in comparison to CPM.
However on the other hand a Certified Professional Midwife CPM..is professional with skills in midwifery that may have been earned via apprenticeship and again it doesn't require a nursing degree to be a CPM.
However they are registered by relevant regulatory bodies to enable them to practice, their practice mainly is in homes and not major hospitals like the CNM...
They also strive to improve the outcomes of pregnant women and their babies by identifying danger signs and refer them appropriately when need be.
So I tend to have the opinion that to attain CNM might be more cumbersome and demanding unlike attaining CPM..however both require good acumen... may take though
