How long does it normally take for someone with a doctorate in Psychology to find a job?

I'm starting to worry about finding a well-paying job when I obtain my doctorate in Psychology. The end goal is to start my own practice, but I'd like to be more knowledgeable about the timeline of these events. #psychmajor

Tatum,

Kudos on being so goal oriented. That in itself will help you go further.

Per your question, the timeline and job search would depend on you. Once you get closer to graduation, I would suggest beginning the job hunt in your field in order to have prospects in line to go straight from graduation to the workforce while things are still fresh on your mind. I would also suggest that if the end result is you having your own practice in the end, then start as a partner in an office and therefore you can build up your patient base before you spend the time, effort, and money to go it alone.

Another suggestion would be a vision/goal board. Start a board with all the things you want to do and then put a time line on it. That way it will keep you focused on your dream but still let you visualize the finish line as well. Remove a piece as you complete it until you get to the very end which is your own practice. Good luck.
