When applying to jobs as a professional do they see if you were involved with the university?

I’m thinking of getting more involved with the university and I know that it opens doors and opportunities but I want to know more specifically if it makes a difference when you apply to a job after you graduate. #fiu #miami

Elaine’s Answer

Hello fellow Panther!

I myself am an FIU Alum. It depends on the company. Some companies look for candidates that are involved in their university or volunteer in their community. I was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity at FIU. It shows companies you have a sense of community and social skills which indicates you can work in a team environment. In addition, it helps build your network. Networking is an important part of building your career.

Great Question ! Getting involved around the university can be excellent resume builders. Being involved can demonstrate your ability to handle not only your classes but a extra responsibilities as well. The key is to balance those and ensure that academics take priority.

As you mentioned, campus involvement can also be a great way to network, which can open doors in the future. Additionally, if you get involved with something aligned to your degree, it can give you exposure before you graduate.

Hallie’s Answer

Hi Luis, good question! In my personal post-grad experience, I think that being involved on campus is a great decision that will help you out exponentially as you begin your professional journey. Not only does getting involved help you build your resume but it also gives you some great speaking topics as you begin to interview for your first job after graduation. However, much more important than that, being involved helps you develop important skills that are valued by employers in the work place such as social skills, collaboration, and time management. One of the best pieces of advice I think I can give you is to find an organization that you really enjoy and are passionate about and take the next step to take on a leadership role within the organization. I think this type of role can help you develop the skills needed to be a leader in the workplace in the future, which is something employees love to see. Best of luck!

Good question! If you are a recent graduate and fairly new to the workforce, it certainly helps to show your involvement with the University. However, from my experience with previously working for staffing agencies a lot of employers rely heavily on relevant experience and willingness to learn. I've provided a link below for top characteristics managers look for in college graduates. You should utilize sites such as Glassdoor or Linkedin to help prepare you for what managers typically look for in young professionals.
