Although getting an MD or DO would always be a good choice, people who pursue an nursing degree in undergrad and then get a masters' degree to get a nurse practitioner would also be in a good position to do this type of work. Also, it would take less time and be less expensive. One of my family members is a nurse practitioner.

Being a trained emergency medicine or family practice physician would be good background for this sort of work. I would contact an organization like Medecins Sans Frontiers (Doctors Without Borders) for more advice.
