Are you staying local or willing to travel? Most of the big music companies offer internships. Companies like Universal Music, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music all have programs with offices in LA and NY. Their websites are a good place to look. In addition, there are so many other music businesses that can offer a good learning experience. What aspect of the music business are you interested in? Digital streaming, music licensing, music law, artist and repertoire, publicity, marketing, the list can go on. The good thing about internships are they give you an insight into what direction you may want to go. My first internship in music was working for a concert promoter. It was a good experience to see if that part of the industry was right for me. I found the internship through a college friend who was already working in the business. If there are local promoters in your area, that can be a good place to inquire about internships.

The best places to start looking are at the record labels of the music you like. It is much better to be interning somewhere that offers a product you like or have a connection to. Do you stream music? Maybe Spotify, Amazon, or Apple Music have internships that can be a great place to immerse yourself with all things music business. Or how about the management companies of the artist you like? I simple internet search can usually reveal who manages who. Artist management companies are another great place to intern.

If you are cold calling, expect to contact over a dozen places. If you are tenacious and creative, you will land a good internship.

Best of luck to you.

Sophia recommends the following next steps:

Internet Search the artists, record labels, and music business (streaming, etc.) that you like or are familiar with. This will lead you to discovering even more businesses.
Create an internship inquiry letter, customize it for each target, and start emailing or calling. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Be humble, courteous, and appreciative of peoples time.
Network. If you cannot find a good lead, start looking through your contacts to see if you can make any new connections with people in the music business who can maybe give you introductions to more people in the music business. Everyone is a resource.
