How Much Education Would You Need to be a Dermatologist?

My name is Christina .A, and I am an 8th grader at Pikeville High School in Pikeville, KY.
I know I am very young, but I am interested in the field of dermatology. I do science academics and I am in a Verizon Innovative Camp. I am wondering how much education you need to be a dermatologist. #doctor #medicine

Thank you comment icon Hello Christina. I commend you for your commitment to improving lives!! To become a Dermatologist, you will need to first obtain your Bachelor's Degre, which usually takes approximately 4 years. Secondly, you will need to apply to a Medical School. Upon acceptance, you will then complete a Medical School, which will take about 4 years to complete. Once you graduate from Medical School, you will then do a "residency" to prepare you to be a doctor on your own. I am nearing the completion of my Bachelor's Degree, and will soon be applying to Medical Schools myself. Don't get discouraged by how long everything may seem, as I almost did. But I must say, the time has gone by quickly!!! I wish you the best of luck Christina. Bradley

Hi Christina,

It is very exciting that you are interested in Dermatology :) it is a wonderful field! You will have to do 4 years of college, then 4 years of medical school, and then 4 years of residency in dermatology. I know it sounds like a lot of years, but they go by fast and you will learn so much! I hope this helps, and good luck!
