Hi Rachel! It's so awesome that you're interested at a young age. It does take hard work to get through college & pharmacy school. It is up to you to determine if it is worth it. You should ask yourself why are you interested in pharmacy? If it is just for the money, then it is probably not worth it. The journey to becoming a pharmacist will be stressful but I personally think it's worth it because I love patient-care. I also love being able to use my knowledge of chemistry, biology, and math in order to help my patients.

Mary recommends the following next steps:

Volunteer somewhere, preferably somewhere health-care related (ex: hospital)
Work as a pharmacy technician/trainee when you're old enough
Complete college pre-requisites for pharmacy school

The school-work and education to become a pharmacist can be challenging but is worth it if it's something that you're passionate about and enjoy learning about medication and helping patients. It's up to you to determine if it would be worth it - I would recommend starting to look at the different options that pharmacists have for their careers after pharmacy school to help you decide. Before I went to pharmacy school, I thought that pharmacists only work in the retail pharmacy setting such as CVS, Walgreens, independent pharmacies, etc. Now that I have graduated, I have realized there are SO many more options for pharmacists! Pharmacists can work in a hospital, retail pharmacy, compounding pharmacy, outpatient clinic, and pharmaceutical industry setting, just to name a few. Within pharmaceutical industry, where I work now, I've learned that pharmacists can work in marketing, research/drug development, sales positions, and so much more!
