What is the best way to go about finding scholarships?

I don't think I'm going to qualify for much financial aid, but there is also absolutely no way I have enough saved to go to my dream colleges, which are out of town.

Salwa’s Answer

Coming from an immigrant family with limited knowledge about college resources, and facing financial constraints, I found it crucial to seek help when it was time to search for financial aid. School counselors are a valuable resource in this regard. They can provide current scholarship lists, direct you to appropriate scholarship opportunities, and guide you to books full of scholarship options. It's also beneficial to check college websites for scholarships they offer directly. Once you've collected this information, you can arrange it into lists or spreadsheets for easy tracking. Hiring someone for a day or two to help you understand your research and navigate the balance between loans and scholarships could also be a cost-effective strategy. Don't lose hope if you don't secure a full scholarship. You may still be able to attend your dream school with a significant portion of your costs covered by various scholarships, requiring only a small loan. Navigating this process can seem overwhelming, but don't hesitate to utilize the resources at your school or local library. They're there to help, even if asking feels a bit uncomfortable.

Anneliese,

Don't be dismayed - the biggest mistake most families make when considering the cost of college is getting over-concerned by sticker price. Apply for all aid first so you can compare apples to apples. I can't begin to even tell you how many families I've met that swore they couldn't afford school due to the cost - only to find out that what the child qualified for made it affordable! Sure, this doesn't work out for everyone at every college, but don't get too worried about it until you apply for all of the aid through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and other sources that you qualify for.

In the meantime, check out websites like Scholarships.com, Fastweb.com and Chegg.com/scholarships for scholarships.

Good luck!
