Organic Chemistry? What should I expect?

Hello, my name is Bradley, I am a Junior in College, and I figured I would reach out to see what advice I may be able to obtain in regards to taking Organic Chemistry 1.

Any suggestions or advice??

Hi Bradley! Organic Chemistry was very interesting especially the labs however it is hard work. I would definitely make notecards and memorize as well as know how to do the reactions. It is a lot of reactions and reagents used therefore you need to what forms to what. Notecards will help but knowing the processes are just as important. You will also become best friends with carbon and their bonds, out of all the reaction and topics discussed what really stuck with me was the carbon-carbon bonds. They aren't like chemistry though, the bonds in Organic Chem are represented through line drawings. Study everyday for Organic Chemistry because there is a lot of information and you want to feel comfortable with it before exams/quizzes! Even though I personally struggled I had an amazing professor who taught well and it ended up being one of my favorite classes!

Best of luck!

Bashir’s Answer

Organic Chemistry is all about Carbon and its nature. If you love chemistry, you will absolutely love Organic chemistry. It can seem a little bit hard in the first classes, but the more and deeper you dig in the more it makes sense. The mechanisms and different functional groups become more interesting to draw and figure out. Expect the best experience when learning and also most of the things you will learn, are applied in industries and technology. Therefore, you will be able to start up personal projects after completing the class.

Jeff’s Answer

Hi Bradley - organic chemistry was the hardest of all of my chemistry classes (I ended up getting an advanced degree in Analytical Chemistry). Having said that, it is a fascinating subject, specifically in the area of synthesis. You will learn how compounds are formed by reacting with other compounds, in the presence of reagents and catalysts (in some cases). Mechanisms are exceptionally interesting because you see the how behind the reactions. All of this combines to give you an excellent education in how carbon chemistry fits into the overall chemical scheme. It was the most challenging for me but also the most rewarding when it "clicked". Good luck!
