I always wanted to pursue a degree in Marine Biology, though I do not want to become a teacher. What steps should I take to ensure that I am in a position of research rather than teaching?

The most important things that you can do to investigate the opportunities in Marine Biology are
- getting to know yourself better to learn how your personality traits match with people in specific areas within Marine Biology
- doing interpersonal networking to talk personally with people involved in Marine Biology to see what they do, how they got there, and what they might have to offer as suggestions and advice
Getting to know yourself and how your personality traits relate to people involved in various career opportunities is very important in your decision making process. During my many years in Human Resources and College Recruiting, I ran across too many students who had skipped this very important step and ended up in a job situation which for which they were not well suited. Selecting a career area is like buying a pair of shoes. First you have to be properly fitted for the correct size, and then you need to try on and walk in the various shoe options to determine which is fits the best and is most comfortable for you to wear. Following are some important steps which I developed during my career which have been helpful to many .

Not sure where you are in your education...high school, already in college or otherwise. But if you're looking around at Marine Biology college programs, look for those that emphasize research over formal classroom education and go down that track. With respect to research, if you're in high school join whatever STEM club may be offered. And ask your teachers if you can help out with any projects or if you can earn extra credit for doing some of your own research on a marine biology topic - studying marine ecosystems, climate change impact on marine life, etc.
