Do I need to be a cop and get promoted to swat

On our department(not my University job) you have to start off in a black in white for a minimum of three years before you can promote or transfer. You have to prove that you can do the fundamental job requirements of being an officer and that's done on the streets. I have been our swat team going on 25 years. On average the officers that make it on, have 5-7 years of experience. You have to realize, this is one of the most popular jobs on the department and a lot of people want to get on it. Few departments, except very large ones have a full time team. On most, you are on assigned to the team and have a regular job , mine was being a detective. We train every month and if there is a need for the swat team, we respond. You must be in good physical shape and very good with weapons, besides displaying good sound judgement on all of your police calls.
