Roxanne’s Answer

HR Management is a broad function. It is has wide range of services to a certain business operation. But the biggest role of an HR Leader & Team is to act as strategic partner to the management / business owners by guiding them and helping them align decisions / plans to the business goals. They must ensure, likewise, that the various HR services support the same goals.

Anything! You can find an area if HR that interests you, such as: operations, employee relations, retention, etc and expand on that. I found myself wanting to learn everything until I found my passion for operations, then pursued learning as much as possible in this area.

Dave’s Answer

You are asking a great question and obviously recognize that the work varies within Human Resources. Find what interests you within the field. Employee relations, Operations, Recruiting, Compensation/ Benefits, Workforce development, etc. You may check out a resource such as SHRM to learn more about each.

Crystal A.’s Answer

Savannah, the field of human resources management is very vast and divided among several areas, from recruitment and staffing, compensation and benefits, training and development, employee relations and satisfaction, wellness and wellbeing, and labor laws and legal compliance. Each are rewarding and dynamic. Sometimes depending on your job level and job expertise (or general familiarity), you naturally flex into several areas or are even exposed to them given an employee’s lifecycle with the organization throughout their tenure. Two possible questions to ask yourself are: is there a particular area that interests you more, and do you enjoy being relationship focused or behind the scenes making the magic work for employees during their life events? Remember Human Resources is about putting “human” back into focus, and sometimes individuals forget that, especially when big data, metrics, and analytics become a primary focus. These tools and data are to help support and manage the operations of HR to run effectively and efficiently, not takeover the purpose of HR. Also in HR, you can learn to be a great strategic partner/ advisor while at the same time advocating for employees interests. Good luck; HR Management is a terrific field.
