I would recommend living on campus especially for your first year or two. Living on campus is often more convenient in not having to worry about rent or paying the utility bill. Additionally, on campus housing provides furniture for students. On campus also makes it easier to be a part of the community at school as you are living close to classmates.

Loren’s Answer

Hi Mary, great question! I would also recommend living on campus. My college required freshman to live on campus and the friends I met that year are still my close friends today (19 years later!). It was also very easy to get to class, the library, and the dining halls. I didn't stress about parking or traffic and I was able to wake up, get dressed, and easily walk to class. Finally, this all reflected in my grades. I was able to achieve a 4.0 my freshman year, which built the foundation for a good GPA throughout my entire time in college.

For your Freshman year, I would always suggest living on campus!

By living on campus, you have easy access to your classes/ libraries and you will have plenty of chances to meet other freshman who have also chosen to live on campus. You have three more years to live off campus, so what does it hurt to try on campus for a year-  you will likely never have the chance to get the dorm experience again!

Living off campus equates to having monthly bills and commutes so I would say don't rush to live off campus. Also when your a freshman its important to get that "college experience" There are a lot of events that you may miss out on because you are a commuter. Lastly some colleges may not allow you to live off campus or even have a car your freshman year so look into that.
