Shannon’s Answer
Research suggests that it is genetically caused, but there is no exact cause of autism yet. As autism co-occurs with other disorders (ex. sensory processing, learning disabilities, ADHD, etc) research says that it has something to do with how the brain processes information. It could be that the brain has to filter through a lot of information occurring simultaneously or that the brain has a slower processing speed.

Roshan’s Answer
Research points out that cognitive abilities like autism are caused genetically. However, researchers are also exploring other factors such as viral infections, medications, complications during pregnancy or air pollutants that could play a role in triggering autism.
Autism affects children of all races and nationalities, but certain factors increase a child's risk. These may include: the child's sex, family history, extremely preterm babies, parents' ages and other factors.
