Stephon’s Answer

Watch lots of movies! Watch “behind the scenes” and interviews with filmmakers. Make your own movies with your phone. Work with your friends. Take classes online. Read books about filmmaking. Do all that before going to college which I did and have been making documentary films, music videos, commercials and corporate videos for over a decade.

Henry’s Answer

Hello Desiree,

both Photography and Film studies have their own courses, although you can transition into film and photography from other specialisms.

For example Art, or Media Studies are both relevant to informing how to create good photographs and films. The idea of composition, and light should be taught in traditional Fine Art, this is extremely relevant to photography, both still and moving image.

Photo manipulation and digital photography mean that understanding graphics programs and how to use computers is also really important.

Ultimately you are learning to become a master of crafting light, shadows and colors to tell a story and create a mood.
