What should I major in to become a pharmacist while I am an undergrade?

There aren't many schools in California that have pre-pharmacy as a possible major and I do not have the funds to go out of state. #Majors

Miguel’s Answer

You can major in chemistry or perhaps major in something else (to appear interesting and different!). However, just make sure you satisfy all requirements for the school(s) your are applying for.

Yasemin’s Answer

Hi Malvika! My friend majored in Biochemistry! I think it helped her because she took a lot of interesting and advanced courses. There are definitely requirements to complete before pharmacy school especially if you are doing a joint program, so I agree with Miguel to definitely make sure you are completing the classes beforehand. Keep checking with your adviser; there's also a specific adviser that helps with joint programs, I would also recommend to seek out one if you will be enrolled in a joint program. Quick note about joint programs are that you apply to pharmacy school as an undergrad, but you do not take the entrance exam; you have to uphold a certain GPA and based on that you get an interview. I would recommend to check out more about this if this seems interesting to you!

I hope this helps!
Best of luck!

Min’s Answer

It depends on the school you are interested in attending. For example, my school in Massachusetts accepted people from English majors to biochemistry majors. Going into a life sciences major or a chemistry major may be helpful to you, but not a hard requirement.

Min recommends the following next steps:

Research pharmacy schools are interested in and look into prerequisites. Most schools will list the minimum requirements for a prospective student.
Reach out to students in the schools you are interested in. Ask if they are willing to answer questions!
